“Beide culturen helpen me in mijn ondernemerschap.

Tech Company News interview with BrighterBins

Tech Company News interview with BrighterBins Publish Date: Feb 6, 2021 Below is our recent interview with Noman Ahmed, CEO ofBrighterBins: Q: Could you provide our readers with a brief introduction to BrighterBins? A: Of course! Brighterbins was created when our founder, Noman Ahmed saw the waste littered on his children’s playground due to overflowing public bins. On the way home from the playground he hit his car’s steering wheel in frustration, as he was inching homeward in rush-hour behind a 15-ton garbage truck. The smell of diesel seeping into his children’s lungs in the backseat was a painful metaphor. His children’s playground was overflowing with litter, and inefficient waste management spewed unnecessary amounts of climate gas into the atmosphere. Waste management needed change. ‍ What if waste bins could talk to us? What if waste management knew exactly which bins should be emptied, and which ones should be left for another week? Noman wanted to develop sensors that measured fill-levels of garbage containers, as well as a software solution that uses AI to calculate the best pickup-routes. So, he assembled a team of engineers and got started. After years of development, the sensor was market-ready and highly competitive. A cost-effective smart waste bin sensor with a flexible design, fit for any type of waste bin. It was the answer to overflowing bins and inefficient waste pickup. BrighterBins is currently expanding to new markets, making a second iteration of their software solution and further developing our sensors for numerous use-cases. Q: Tell us something more about your solution? A: The BrighterBins sensor and software present years of development wrapped into a user-friendly and easy-to-implement solution. Based on research done in several cities, public bins are on average emptied only around 40% fill level! This is a major waste of money, time and carbon emissions. Overflowing bins present just as big a problem, both worsening our city environment and wasting money on picking up litter which could’ve been easily avoided using BrighterBins’ solution. Our software boasts planning tools such as: Fleet management, Truck routing and scheduling, fill-level forecasting, reporting & analytics and more. The sensor is both cheap and fits 90% of bins, both big and small! ‍ Q: Who would be your ideal customer and why? A: That’s a rather difficult question, as every new customer is an opportunity for us to tailor the solution to their needs. Public bins in cities, water tanks and large containers alike are all examples of areas that can benefit from the BrighterBins solution. If you think ‘could this be a possibility for my company?’, chances are it very well could be. ‍ Q: What can we expect from BrighterBins in the future? A: There are exciting times ahead for BrighterBins. We are currently developing a second iteration of software platform. This second-generation platform will have specialized user interfaces for management seniors and for waste-route planners and dispatchers. We are looking forward to hearing our customers and partners feedback on this new software, ready to make alterations and adjustments to fit the individual customers needs. Although our mission is to become a key player in waste-management logistic solutions, we are also targeting other sectors using alterations of the same solution.

SmartEnds Vision AI Solution: A Revolution in Glass Recycling and Ceramic (CSP) Contaminant Detection At first glance, recycling glass seems straightforward: deposit the appropriate materials into designated bins, and they should re-enter the recycling process to be used again. However, the complex nature of the glass recycling process leads to over 25% of used glass being sent to landfills. This is due to contamination. When tiny fragments of glass become intermingled with other substances, such as bottle tops, stones, and ceramics, separation becomes challenging. Consequently, this contaminated glass often finds its way to landfills. The presence of contaminants such as Ceramics, Stone, and Porcelain (CSP) presents challenges to the recycling process, risking the spread of harmful impurities. SmartEnds addresses this issue with their innovative Vision AI sensors, revolutionizing glass recycling.
SmartEnds Vision AI Solution: ‍SmartEnds introduces Vision AI smart cameras, powered by artificial intelligence and computer vision technologies, to detect CSP contaminants in glass waste before it enters the recycling facility. This technology detects and eliminates CSP materials, ensuring the production of high-quality recycled glass and promoting sustainable waste management practices. ‍How it Works Upon arrival at the glass recycling facility, the collection vehicle unloads its contents into a large container on site. At this juncture, our advanced Vision AI camera, strategically positioned on the container’s wall, activates to record a brief, approximately 10-second video. This footage captures the glass waste being transferred from the truck to the container, documenting the flow of material. ‍ The AI-driven technology then meticulously analyzes the footage to pinpoint any CSP contaminants. Once identified, the system promptly dispatches a notification, along with the detection video, to the truck operator or facility management. This rapid alert enables swift intervention to extract the contaminants from the load. ‍ Our primary goal is to preemptively remove any CSP related contaminants from the glass, streamlining the recycling process by ensuring only clean material progresses to the next stages of processing. ‍ This entire operation is facilitated by our cutting-edge Smart Camera, which is securely installed on the facility’s wall and leverages WiFi & LTE-M for seamless connectivity. The captured video is wirelessly transmitted to the staff’s mobile devices, providing them with precise insights into when and where contaminants appear within the process. For example, if a contaminant is detected at the 2-second mark of the video, the team can act immediately to address and remove it, enhancing the efficiency and effectiveness of the recycling procedure. ‍Benefits of SmartEnds Vision AI Sensor: ‍‍ ‍1. Enhanced Recycling Efficiency: Improves efficiency and productivity by ensuring high-quality recycled glass. ‍ ‍2. Reduced Landfill Waste: By removing contaminants early in the process, the system helps decrease the amount of glass and other materials sent to landfills. ‍ ‍3. How Did SmartEnds Deploy Europe’s Largest Smart Bins Project in Edinburgh?

Introduction:  Imagine a city struggling with overflowing waste bins, inefficient collection routes, and mounting environmental concerns. This was the reality for Edinburgh until the City of Edinburgh Council decided to take a bold step towards smarter, greener waste management. Edinburgh City Council selected SmartEnds to deploy their smart sensors across 11000 public bins in the city of Edinburgh. ‍ Client Background: The City of Edinburgh Council, serving over 500,000 residents, was committed to sustainability but faced significant challenges with their traditional waste management methods. They needed a solution that could handle the complexities of a modern city while reducing their environmental footprint. The Challenge: For years, Edinburgh’s waste collection system was riddled with inefficiencies. Traditional methods led to higher fuel consumption and soaring operational costs. Without real-time data, the council’s decisions were often based on outdated information, leading to ineffective waste collection routes and missed recycling opportunities. The environmental impact was undeniable, and the council knew something had to change. The Turning Point: Determined to tackle these issues head-on, the City of Edinburgh Council partnered with SmartEnds. The goal was ambitious: deploy over 11,000 BrighterBins Time of Flight (ToF) smart devices across the city to create the largest smart bin sensor network in Europe. These devices would provide real-time data on waste levels, revolutionizing the way the city managed its waste. ‍ Implementation Journey: Deployment: The project began with the strategic placement of BrighterBins devices throughout Edinburgh. Every street corner, residential area, and commercial zone was carefully mapped out to ensure optimal coverage. ‍Integration: Next, the devices were seamlessly integrated with the council’s existing systems. This integration meant that real-time data flowed directly into City of Edinburgh’s advanced software, providing actionable insights at the council’s fingertips. ‍Training: SmartEnds didn’t just deliver the technology—they empowered the council’s team with comprehensive training. This ensured that everyone, from the waste collection crews to the city planners, could leverage the new system effectively.‍ A New Era of Waste Management: With BrighterBins in place, the results were immediate and transformative. The city saw a dramatic reduction in fuel consumption and operational costs as collection routes were optimized based on real-time data. No longer were bins overflowing or collection trucks driving unnecessary miles. The council could now make informed decisions that not only improved efficiency but also had a positive environmental impact. Environmental Impact: The optimized routes and enhanced recycling efforts led to a substantial decrease in the city’s carbon footprint. Edinburgh was no longer just a city—it became a model of sustainability for others to follow.
